This tour is part of the Athens Ohio Architectural Treasures Day, which is presented by the Athens County Historical Society and Preservation Athens. Architectural Treasures Day is a celebration of the remarkable architectural heritage of Athens Ohio and will feature two walking tours. One tour will focus on Frank Packard buildings and the other on the former Athens Asylum. Both tours will be led by historians who are experts on the heritage of the building collections.

Walking Tour of Frank Packard Buildings in Athens. Led by Barbara Powers, State Historic Preservation Office. Meet in Vestibule of First Presbyterian Church, 2 South Court St., Metered parking is available in Athens City Garage, 7 E. Washington St.

The tour will include buildings designed by Frank Packard and another prominent Ohio architect Levi Tucker Scofield, known for his work on a variety of projects such as the Ohio Penitentiary in Mansfield, the Cleveland Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the These Are My Jewels statue on the Ohio Statehouse grounds.

Walking Tour of The Ridges (former Athens Asylum). Led by George Eberts, Athens Asylum Historian. Meet at Main Steps of Kennedy Art Museum, 100 Ridges Circle. Free parking is available in lots next to museum.

Mr. Eberts acclaimed tours of the grounds of the former state mental hospital provide insights into the history of mental health, the development of psychiatry, and the experiences of those who lived and worked at the asylum.

The tours will focus on building exteriors. Participants who wish to go inside one of the asylum buildings are encouraged to visit the Kennedy Museum of Art before or after the tour. The Kennedy Museum is housed in the main Kirkbride building (museum hours are 1-5pm).
